Nathan Smith

I am a web developer.

Who am I

I am a web developer based in Auckland, New Zealand. I live with my beautiful wife and work in Auckland CBD.

I’ve been doing web dev things ever since university. I’ve had plenty of experience building web sites from scratch, both front-end and back-end. With every new site I always take a mobile first approach.

I love creating things for the web and mobile. Being (mainly) a front-end developer is awesome as it's a mix of creativity and logic.

Among these things I also enjoy movies, gym, dancing and hitting up food markets with my wife and friends.

What I have done

Tap blocks to expand

The New Zealand Herald

I constantly updated and maintained the New Zealand Herald website, which attracts thousands of daily visitors. The site itself has a lot of subsites, all of which I was heavily involved with the development on.

Auckland Botanic Gardens

This website was created for the Auckland Council as a complete redesign of the existing Auckland Botanic Gardens website. The original website was non-responsive and poorly designed, so this project looked to improve that. I was the sole front end developer on this. Some notable techniques I used were REM units for responsive text, font icons and a colour theme which changes depending on the current season (summer, autumn, winter and spring).

Make the most of waste

This website was created for the Auckland Council to give the Auckland population a central hub for rubbish and recycling information. I was the sole front end developer for this project.

Our Auckland

This website was created for the Auckland Council to be a central place for Auckland news, events and social media. I was the sole front end developer for this project. I made use of the masonry grid javascript library to display the various articles, which allowed them to have multiple sizes and still fit together nicely.

TaaS

This is an internal website used primarily by Spark Digital. The project was created to inform Spark employees of its new service, as well as providing frequent news updates. I built the whole website myself, the front end on AngularJS and the backend using Firebase, which is a cloud database provider. The website makes use of Angulars SPA methodologies, as well the polling functionality that Firebase provides. This gives instantaneous updates to the user without a page refresh.

Avertana

This website was created for the company Avertana. They specialise in taking raw materials like paint, paper and fertilsers, then turning them into useful minerals and chemicals. My job was to create a website to showcase their achievements and who they are. I was the full stack developer for this project and built everything myself. I also made them a simple blog system for any relevant news updates.

Show your love

This website was made for the Auckland general elections for the Auckland Council. The main purpose was to spread awareness of the upcoming elections and to get people to vote. The website had some affect on the general Auckland populous as the voting percentage increased since the last election. I was in charge of creating the front end of the website. I built it on the Angular JS framework, using a lot of its core functionality like controllers, services and directives. I got the data through a JSON API, which allowed a lot more control on the front end.

Universal design tool

This website was made for the Auckland Design Manual, under the Auckland Council. They wanted a separate website to show their suite of tools on universal building design for designers, developers and project managers. I was the sole full stack developer on the project and was assigned to create a system which the client can update and edit. I used Wordpress for the CMS, developing a complicated sitemap to adhere to their many pages and sub pages.

Workshop6

This website was made for the jewellery making company Workshop6. They create all sorts of jewellery using machinery or by hand. They do classes, workshops and benchspace hiring. I was the sole developer on this, building it on Wordpress to allow the client to maintain the website. I integrated Paypal into the backend which uses the service as a third party application. When paying for a class the user is redirected to Paypal, then from there redirected back to the website.
